It is rare to find an author on this subject, especially one who has such insight into the situation people faced in those times. Mainly focussed on Ash in the 70's, we watch a complex world full of subtle detail in which the author is refreshingly honest. The relationship between Ash and his grandfather is particularly fascinating as they convincingly build a Spitfire together, (not ordinarily something I would get into) which has an interesting impact on both of them. It's surprising and heart-breaking. A page turner. ***** As an amateur pilot and aviation enthusiast but also a wartime adopted child I felt Andrew captured the magic of the Spitfire and the loneliness, no matter how hard people try, of being adopted. Thank you Andrew not only for that but also for giving me the resolution to book a flight in a two seat Spitfire as a 72nd birthday present to myself regardless of cost. ***** This is a beautifully nuanced book told from a number perspectives including an asian boy, Ash, in the 1970s (adopted by a white mother), Ash as a grown man by the bedside of his own son in hospital, Ash's grandfather who he goes to live with as a child and the WW2 Indian fighter pilot from Trinidad (yes Indian from Trinidad) whose engine Ash finds buried in a large pond on his grandfather's farm and rebuilds with him. It is a story few could tell and the writer clearly has a profound understanding of the issues involved. I know nothing about engines but while it will catch the interest of who are interested in WW2 and fighter planes, to me it was the sensitivity of the relationships and the delicate interweaving of racial and familial issues here that stood out. Somehow heart lifting as well as heart breaking, it is a great read.
