Excerpt from Catalogue of the Antiquities of Stone, Earthen, and Vegetable Materials: In the Museum of the Royal Irish Academy It is only fair to him to state that the difficulty of the undertaking was greatly increased by the circum stance that, almost during the whole period of his labours, the Museum was in the occupation of the workmen employed by the Board of Works in put ting up glass-cases, &c., as well as in the painting and decoration of the Room. Owing to this circumstance, together with the shortness of the time, it was not possible to do all that might be wished, especially as it was necessary to have the whole, as far as possible, completed before the Meeting of the British Association on the 26th of this month. The remainder of the Catalogue is in progress, but it is hoped that the Part now published will be a suffi cient evidence to the Academy of the zeal and inde fatigable diligence of the compiler. It contains a description of the articles composed of Stone, Earthen, and Vegetable Materials - a classification which, on the whole, was deemed most convenient. It has also been illustrated by 159 engravings on wood, drawn by Mr. Du Noyer and Mr. Wakeman, and cut by Mr. Hanlon and Mr. Oldham and it is hoped that these illustra tions will add not only to the interest, but also to the permanent value and authority of the work.
