Overview

English summary: Few artists are interpreted as contradictorily as Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), probably the most important German painter of the 19th century. Many consider him the Romantic landscape painter par excellence. For Helmut Borsch-Supan, however, who has studied Friedrich again and again for decades, his paintings are deeply rooted in religious sentiment. In this book, he traces Friedrich's world of thought with regard to what the artist himself called the ""idiosyncrasy"" that underpinned his personality and creative individuality. It also illuminates the thought processes that connect his works with each other - the complete work thus proves to be a whole. Information about the nature and thinking of Friedrich is provided by his friends and adversaries: Carl Gustav Carus, Johan Christian Dahl, Gerhard von Kugelgen, Georg Friedrich Kersting, Wassili Andrejewitsch Schukowski and Maximilian Speck von Sternburg.
