Author Information

Jost Hamschmidt is the Managing Director of the oikos Foundation, an international reference point for sustainability research and teaching in Business and Economics education. He is also a Lecturer at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Jost received a master in Business Administration from the University of Kassel (Germany), a BA in Technology Management from the University of St. Etienne (France) and holds a Ph.D. in Management from the University of St Gallen. He has been a visiting fellow at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley (2001/2) and Harvard Business School (2007/8). In 2007 he edited the Volume 'Case Studies on Sustainability and Strategy: The oikos collection' (Greenleaf Publishing) and in 2008 he co-edited the volume 'Sustainability Entrepreneurship and Innovation' (Edward Elgar). At oikos he is responsible for fundraising and leading the oikos academic programs. In his teaching, he focuses on action-oriented learning methods for creating sustainability-driven transformation processes in small and large organizations. He has worked with social entrepreneurial ventures such as Myclimate, South Pole Carbon Asset Management, and Traktor AG. In 2010 he became founding member of The Hub Association Zurich, a Social Entrepreneurship incubator. Michael Pirson is Assistant Professor at Fordham University, New York, and a Research Fellow at Harvard University. He is also the track chair of the oikos Global Case Writing Competition - Social Entrepreneurship track. Michael received his PhD in Organizational Behavior from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. His research focuses on the conditions of stakeholder trust in organizational contexts. He is also examining the impact of organizational design on stakeholder well-being and looks at social enterprises as humanistic alternatives to traditional business design. In his teaching, he focuses on the management dilemmas in the 21st century, such as ecological and social sustainability, stakeholder trust, employee engagement, and individual happiness. He also uses activity-based learning techniques to teach social entrepreneurship. Before receiving his doctorate, Michael worked in international management consulting for several years. He also gained experience in the political arena while working on Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign. Michael has started several social enterprises in the area of economic development and currently serves on the board of three social enterprises based in the U.S.
