The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection of classical carpets comprise carpets from every Near Eastern and Oriental country. In this catalogue, 70 carpets and nine textiles are presented, each piece discussed in depth and illustrated in colour. Some 30 additional pieces are reproduced as comparative material. Comprehensive introductions for each of the geographical groupings provide the reader with a complete overview of the classical oriental carpet.

"Dr. Friedrich Spuhler was formerly Curator of Islamic Art in Berlin-Dahlem. In 1978 he became advisor to the Farah-Diba Foundation in Teheran and set up the first Persian Carpet Museum. In 1985 he opened a gallery of antique Persian and Turkish carpets, textiles and Islamic works of art.
