OverviewPalliative care represents a space of humanity and respect at the end of life. At a time when living longer is not always synonymous with living better, this care seeks to alleviate suffering and dignify the last journey of the human being. A study carried out in a Palliative Care Unit in the north of Portugal sought to understand professionals' perceptions of care in the last hours and days of life. The interviews revealed the importance of comfort, empathetic listening, authentic communication and support for the family. Therapeutic futility was rejected in favor of a compassionate and ethical presence, centered on the person. The conclusion is that end-of-life care is an act of love, which requires training, reflection and sensitivity, so that life is honored until the last moment.
