Mental illness brings with it a range of consequences not only for the individual concerned but also for the family and more specifically the primary caregiver. With the absence of a standard definition of caregiving, there is general consensus that caregiving involves the provision of extraordinary care, exceeding the constraints of what is normative or usual in family relationships; it typically involves significant expenditure of time, energy, and money over potentially prolonged periods and involves chores that may be unpleasant or uncomfortable and could be psychologically stressful and/or physically exhausting (Schulz and Martire, 2004). Caregiver burden refers to the significant amount of strain and difficulties experienced by the caregiver or family member of mentally ill people and include a range of psychological, emotional, social, physical, and financial problems (Magliano, Fiorillo, De Rosa, Malangone, and Maj., 2005). Family caregivers' burden in mental illness is a global issue and despite cultural variation is encountered by family caregivers the world over.
