Carbon: Bulk-to-Nano Forms for Detection and Remediation of Environmental Contaminants

Overview

This book provides a thorough examination of the diverse applications of carbon-based materials, including both bulk and nano forms, in the detection and remediation of environmental contaminants. The authors aim to meet the growing need for long-term solutions to environmental contamination by emphasizing the adaptability and efficacy of carbon-based materials in a variety of sensing and repair methods. The book opens with an introduction that discusses carbon-based bulk and nanomaterials, highlighting their importance in environmental sensing and remediation, an offering the groundwork for understanding carbon's critical role in tackling modern environmental issues. It then looks into carbon-based sensing techniques, covering various technologies, including electrochemical sensing, fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, colorimetric detection, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Each chapter delves into these approaches' principles, benefits, and applications, demonstrating the promise of carbon-based materials in accurately and sensitively detecting environmental contaminants. The book also discusses remediation strategies that use carbon-based materials, including adsorption, catalytic degradation, membrane filtration, and antibacterial activity. These chapters give insights into the mechanisms and effectiveness of carbon material-based methods for removing contaminants from diverse environmental matrices and sustainable approaches to environmental remediation. Furthermore, the book includes case studies and real-world applications demonstrating the practical use of carbon-based sensing and remediation strategies. These case studies demonstrate practical applications of carbon-based materials to solve specific environmental concerns, showing successes and obstacles faced in real-world circumstances.

Author Information

Dr. Ajith Manayil Parambil is a researcher specializing in aqueous contaminant sensing and remediation, with expertise in carbon dots, novel composites, logic gates, device fabrication, and biocomputation. He earned his Ph.D. from the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (2023), following an M.Phil. from Madras University and an M.Sc. (Gold Medalist) from Gandhigram University. He has international research experience at Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan, and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Nanotechnology Centre, CEET, VSB-Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic, and a visiting researcher at Tongji University, China. Dr. Parambil has received prestigious fellowships and awards, including the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) OP JAK Postdoctoral Fellowship, Young Scientist Award-2024 (IAAM, Sweden), AWSAR National Award, INSPIRE JRF & SRF (DST, India), Young Scientist International Travel Grant (SERB, DST, India), and Taiwan’s TEEP & Global Talent Internship Scholarships. His research contributions appear in various high-impact journals, and he also served as a reviewer and editor for various journals and publishers.  Dr. Eepsita Priyadarshini specializes in nanomaterial fabrication for environmental and biomedical applications, focusing on nanocoatings to prevent biofilm infections. She holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (CSIR-IMMT, India) and conducted postdoctoral research at JNU, New Delhi. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at Galgotias University, India. She previously served as a DST Women Scientist at JNU and was awarded the Newton-Bhabha Ph.D. Fellowship to conduct research at University College London, UK. She has received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal & University Gold Medal for academic excellence and was recognized among the World’s Top 2% of Scientists (Stanford Ranking 2024). She serves as a reviewer and editor for journals like ACS Applied Biomaterials, Frontiers in Biomaterials, Materials Letters, and Chemical Engineering Journal. Prof. Paulraj Rajamani is a distinguished researcher in radiation biology, nanobiotechnology, nanotoxicology, environmental cancer biology, and occupational health. A Full Professor at the School of Environmental Sciences, JNU, New Delhi, he holds an M.Phil. and Ph.D. from JNU, where he studied electromagnetic radiation’s effects on young rat brains. He later conducted ICMR-supported postdoctoral research on environmental and occupational exposures. His work explores the biological interactions of nanomaterials, radiation-induced cellular responses, and environmental carcinogenesis, contributing to policy discussions on occupational and environmental health risks. As a senior academic, he continues to mentor students and collaborate on cutting-edge research.
