Canoe and camera, a two hundred mile tour through the Maine forests by Thomas Sedgwick Steele. Hulling Machine Falls. East Branch of the Penobscot River.Passing the mouth of the Seboois rivers large and small, we set up our tent on the left bank of the river near a place known as Hunt's Farm. The lonely log house and barn on Hunt's farm were erected some forty-three years ago, and are located on high ground on a scenic bend in the Penobscot River. The outside house is painted red, whitewashed inside, with low ceilings similar to those mentioned. In addition to cultivating the land near the house, a few seasons ago an attempt was made to force tillage, like a melon patch, next to an adjacent mountain, but the fruit, as soon as it became heavy and matured, broke clung to the vines, it rolled down the side of the mountain and was crushed at its base. As can be easily seen, this elevated farm was not a success, and now only the bright green foliage of new tree growth remains to tell the melancholic story.
