Reviews

This riveting firsthand documentary captures the heart and soul of German shepherds and Labrador retrievers, from scout, tracker, patrol, and sentry teams to mine, booby trap, and tunnel units. Expect to shed a few tears in this gut-wrenching account. -- reviewer Seattle Times

John Burnam's incredible story of his bond with scout dogs Timber and Clipper inspired me to join the Army Veterinary Corps. Given the major role that military working dogs play today in homeland security and abroad, it's high time that America's canine soldiers got the recognition they deserve. -- Captain Jennifer M. Mackler US Army veterinarian

A fascinating, heavily researched, and at times keenly personal testimony of the soldier-and-dog teams of Vietnam, Canine Warrior is highly recommended. -- Review Editor The Bookwatch Burnam's incredible story inspired me to join the Army Veterinary Corps where I could combine my passions for veterinary medicine and training search-and-rescue dogs. Given the major role that military working dogs play today in homeland security and abroad, it's high time that America's canine soldiers got the recognition they deserve. -- Captain Jennifer M. Mackler, veterinarian U.S. Army This riveting firsthand documentary captures the heart and soul of German shepherds and Labrador retrievers, from scout, tracker, patrol, and sentry teams to mine, booby trap, and tunnel units. Expect to shed a few tears in this gut-wrenching account. -- Reviews Editor Seattle Times Burnam's account is an upward squint from the mud and blood of battle. A good dog helped a good man survive the horror, only as with other US military dogs to be abandoned when the United States pulled out, a disposable warrior. Such a story merits telling. -- Reviews Editor Dallas Morning News Learning the incredible history and heroic sacrifices of America's war dogs inspired me to submit a congressional bill for a National War Dog Team Memorial. This book is a must-read account of how a young soldier and his faithful dogs teamed up to save American lives on the battlefields of Vietnam. -- U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones North Carolina
