Overview

World leaders are under pressure to deal with Climate Change and invest in green industries that would curb Green House Gas emissions. However in Asia, a nuclear duel between neighboring nuclear armed adversaries is much more of an existential threat. A newly elected Indian Government has a mandate to deal with down to earth issues such as education, healthcare and job creation in order to retrieve the millions of impoverished citizens that have been left behind. To raise funds, they turn to defense cuts and in particular nuclear disarmament. Arms dealers, who see this movement as a serious threat to their multi-billion dollar munitions business, engage terrorists to stop the disarmament movement. Terrorists attempt to destroy the disarmament team by blowing up a Canada to India bound commercial airliner. But some members of the team miss the flight and one of them, a Sikh intelligence officer, Commander Gill, pursues the terrorist, Anil Gods , who flees to England. Gods now focuses on disrupting a Carbon Abatement and Nuclear Disarmament conference scheduled to be held in Lincoln City. The U.K. authorities search for him in vain and refer to him by the code name Canadian Visitor. In Lincoln, the main character, Cynthia Amis, a special education teacher struggles with the school board to provide resources for her two orphaned special needs students. After a chance meeting with a newly arrived Canadian professor at Lincoln University, Paresh Naik, she persuades him to help her. He is an expert in virtual reality simulations and creates avatars that can teach. However, Prof. Naik turns out to be mysterious and reclusive. His only hobby appears to be crossbow shooting. Cynthia is drawn to discover more about him. He hates talking about his family but is drawn to her students, Lisa and Patelji. Moreover, he is prone to bizarre flash back episodes, symptomatic of a person suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. As Cynthia works with Paresh to develop the virtual reality technology, their relationship deepens and so does the bond between Paresh and the children. But unbeknown to Cynthia, Paresh's troubled past comes with a hidden agenda. Will Commander Gill catch Canadian Visitor? Is Paresh and Canadian Visitor one and the same person? Will the relationship between Paresh and Cynthia ever amount to anything or will it be a case of unrequited love? You'll have to read the book to find out! The book also offers novel solutions and debate including an innovative approach to nuclear disarmament called Nuclear Escrow. Nuclear armed countries that adopt the escrow approach are rewarded by investments in green technologies. Children with learning challenges, both gifted and learning disabled, have a major role in the plot of this story. Their problems, such as bullying, are dealt with by virtual reality therapy. The book includes humorous cross-cultural interactions, which should appeal to a wide international audience, as the story progresses from India to Canada and then on to England.

Author Information

The plot of Canadian Visitor covers three countries: India, England and Canada. Prakash has lived for extensive periods of time in each of these countries. He is familiar with the geography and cultural nuances of each country. He lived in India until the age of 17 before going to England to pursue further studies. He is a professional engineer and has worked in the aerospace industries of England and Canada for 25 years. In 1994, he started an Information Technology and Engineering Business, MITE Inc, in Mississauga, Ontario. Many of the technical concepts used in this novel, such as the use of supercomputers to create teaching avatars for challenged learners, stemmed from his work experience. He volunteered for a local chapter of the Learning Disabilities Association and years later became its president. Since 2005, Prakash focused on developing a certification program for adult challenged learners call Para-IT. This concerns the development of employable skills such as Business IT and Soft Skills to help intellectually challenged adults. Prakash's writing debut started in 2008 as a writer of fiction in the mystery/adventure genre. However, the inspiration for Canadian Visitor took place much earlier in 1985, with the horrific bombing of the Air India jetliner off the coast of Southern Ireland. Among the hundreds that needlessly lost their lives, were the wife and two children of Prakash's colleague at work. Other priorities, family and career, took precedence. Decades followed, before this novel could finally be written. However, he called on a much richer life experience to support his narrative. Prakash was a founding member of Mississauga's first environmental protection association. This had him involved in a variety of issues from appearing as an expert witness for an environmental assessment hearing for a garbage incinerator to giving talks to school children about Green House Gas emissions, as far back as 1987! The novel is not about terrorism, but is influenced by the inspiring story of the family survivors of the air-disaster. Prakash weaved his life experience, environmental issues, special education knowledge and an interest in nuclear disarmament into the plot of this novel. In 2010, Prakash received a Civic Award of Recognition from the City of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. This award was for his work as a volunteer and community activist.
