OverviewThis work analyzes American's twenty-first century military challenges. It offers detailed analysis of geo-strategic, geo-political, military and economic risks. The book examines whether America's future role will be considerably diminished and require a fundamental re-evaluation of its terms of engagement. Since World War II, America has shaped and guided the world, a role that took on increasing importance after the Cold War ended. Yet this superpower status may be short lived. The 9/11 attacks in the first year of the twenty-first century crystallized several previously unforeseen or underestimated national security risks that threaten to shake the foundations of America's post war global dominance. The United States now faces a more complex international environment than ever before with multiple challenges, including low intensity yet violent confrontations with 'super-empowered', globally dispersed non-state actors; peer nation competitors who reject liberal democracy and free market capitalism; and assertive emerging powers who demand recognition of their strategic importance and inclusion, as well as leading roles, in international organizations once dominated by America and its allies. The threat environment of the twenty first century thus presents decision makers with an 'unforgiving' international agenda within an international order undergoing a fundamental transition, one which may be far less accommodating to American interests.
