Reviews

“The impassioned words in Call Me an American are reflective of a great patriot whose life journey is a triumph of the human spirit in the face of tremendous adversity. Hung Cao’s journey—as a refugee, a United States Naval Officer on the battlefield, and now—should inspire every American to stand courageously for our great nation and her founding ideals in the face of an insidious, ideological agenda that seeks to destroy the American dream. Hung Cao reminds the reader of what is the exceptionalism that makes our country unique, that beacon of light to the world, which we all must fight for and defend. Call Me an American should be required reading for all, young and old alike. —Mark R. Levin “Hung Cao’s remarkable and inspiring story of how his family survived the defeat in Vietnam, overcame the adversity of having to flee communism, and established themselves in a new land of opportunity and freedom is a stunning tribute both to his family and to the America he served in the military. Hung Cao is the kind of energetic, intelligent, and courageous leader who will make America a better country. His book is a testimonial to those qualities.” —Speaker Newt Gingrich “Call Me an American is a brilliant clarion call for our nation’s future! Hung Cao—a shining example of a new ‘Greatest Generation’ rising up from decades of war—has given us a vision for American greatness. This book is essential reading for all those who truly care about the future of the USA. This is a road map for us, not just to survive, but to thrive. As we love our nation, as we love our children, as we love our way of life: read and heed!” —Lt. Col. Dave Grossman USA (Ret.), Author of On Killing, On Combat, and On Spiritual Combat   “Hung Cao’s life is an example of the true American dream. From immigrant to decorated naval officer, Cao’s story, along with his love of God and country, will inspire every reader! His life experience brings a fresh perspective on what it truly means to be a ‘proud American.’” —Pastor Gary Hamrick, Sr. Pastor, Cornerstone Chapel

Author Information

Retired Navy Captain Hung Cao came to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam in 1975. After a few years in West Africa, Hung moved to Virginia as a child and is a proud member of the inaugural graduating class of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria. He was commissioned as a Special Operations Officer (Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Deep Sea Diving) from the United States Naval Academy, and served with special operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia. Hung’s non-combat assignments included balancing the Navy’s $140 billion budget at the Pentagon, working with Homeland Security, and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. Hung received his Masters degree in physics from the Naval Postgraduate School, and fellowships at MIT and Harvard. He and his wife April are the parents of five beautiful children. After their thirteenth move across the United States, and around the world, Hung and April moved their family home to Purcellville, Virginia where they have been active in their community and church. Hung ran for Congress from Virginia’s 10th District in 2022, and is presently a candidate for the United States Senate from Virginia.
