A bill of sale is used in California when a sale of a motor vehicle takes place. California law is not exactly the same as any other State. The Bill of Sale in this packet is designed for use in the sale of a motor vehicle in the State of California to comply with California law although, California does not make the bill of sale mandatory for the transaction of a motor vehicle. If a bill of sale is used, California will use the bill of sale to compute the Vehicle License Fee. Otherwise, California will use the vehicle's approximate value in calculating the Vehicle License Fee. A bill of sale is still used in California, and provides strong evidence of the occurrence of a transaction between the parties to help prevent fraud.
