We shall utilize information about the transit time of a radio pulse through the ionosphere, from A to H, at frequencies above the maximum critical frequency of the ionosphere. In order to obtain such information we would, of course, have to have a variable frequency transmitter above the ionosphere, say in a rocket. Alternatively, referring to the type of distribu tion shown on Fig. 2, if the density in the region CD above 12 is assumed known.
