Overview

The aim of this book is to take stock of the state of the art in scholarship on Caelius Aurelianus as well as offer new perspectives on this important figure; while doing that, to insert him and his work within current historiographies of medicine and ancient world studies. Thirty years after the last extensive publication devoted to Caelius, the contributions in this volume bring attention back to this important author, and offer new perspectives on his work, contributing to the presently flourishing literature on medicine and science (and their transmission) in the late antique period and beyond.

Author Information

CHIARA THUMIGER is a researcher at the Humboldt Universität, Berlin. Her work focuses on ancient Greek and Roman thought and literature, the history of ancient medicine and the history of psychiatry, as well as on environmental and comparative approaches to anthropology of medicine and body history. She is the author of A History of the Mind and Mental Health in Classical Greek Medical Thought (Cambridge University Press, 2017), editor of Holism in Ancient Medicine and its Reception (Brill 2020) and author of Phrenitis and the Pathology of the Mind in Western Medical Thought (Fifth Century BCE to Twentieth Century CE) (Cambridge University Press, 2024).
