Overview

When tragedy strikes through a horrible accident, JaQuan Miller finds himself on the run in the backstreets of Boston. Torn between loyalty to the small band of youngsters he leads and the need to protect himself, JaQuan longs for the time when his grandmother provided security. Hunted by the police, he seeks help from other young people while adults in the police, a reformed gang member, and women from the SAFE, a refuge for troubled youngsters, try to find or help him. While life goes on in the prosperous layers of Boston's society, one young man desperately strives to find a way to live.

Author Information

Nikki R. Flionis has worked with diverse staff, youth and families in low-income neighborhoods of Boston for over two decades. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College with an AB in English, she also earned a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School and a Masters in Fine Arts from the Stonecoast MFA program at University of Southern Maine. With fellow HKS graduate, Anne Carrabino, she co-founded MissionSAFE: A New Beginning, Inc., a youth and community empowerment organization, in 1997. She is a longtime Boston resident and has been active in issues around affordable housing, community safety, youth and community empowerment, Flionis resides in the Fenway neighborhood. This is her first book.
