Butterfly

Overview

When a mysterious visitor falls from the sky, Earth gains more than proof of alien life - it gains a secret that could change humanity forever. Gilo is not a conqueror, a scientist, or an ambassador. He is a traveler from Olon, a distant world where evolution took a different path, gifting his species with delicate, winglike forms and an understanding of the universe far beyond human imagination. Sent to earth to observe, record, and report, he finds unexpected friendship with, Stephen, a scientist who sees him not as a specimen, but as a person. When called back to Olon, Stephen gifts Gilo with a biological kit that will help explain life on earth. Sadly, the kit was not only rejected by the Council of Olon, but it got into the wrong hands, and the life was released to contaminate the planet. This resulted in a threat to Gilo's life and Stephen having to recruit the help of a space traveler to rescue him. Once back on earth, the government closes in and Chief Investigator Rowan must decide whether Gilo represents a threat to humanity - or its greatest opportunity. Caught between curiosity and control, compassion and secrecy, Gilo must navigate a world driven by suspicion while hiding the deeper purpose behind his journey - a purpose even he does not fully understand. Butterfly is a heartfelt science-fiction story about first contact, trust across worlds, and the fragile beauty of connection in a universe where being different can be both a miracle and a danger. Reviewed by Asher Syed for Readers' Favorite In Eileen Sheehan's Butterfly, Gilo is a robotic observer sent from the engineered planet Olon to study human civilization on Earth for thirty years, under strict orders to observe without interference. After landing near a forested region, he encounters robotics scientist Stephen Bonneville, who brings him to a laboratory where Gilo begins studying human behavior through daily life with Stephen and an android named Maggie. When another scientist reports the encounter to the authorities, Stephen hides Gilo at a remote mountain cabin while officials begin searching for evidence of the unidentified figure. At the same time, rival extraterrestrial forces interfere with materials connected to Gilo's mission, creating a conflict that extends beyond Earth. As pressure from governments and alien factions grows, Stephen has to decide how far he's willing to go to protect the visitor whose presence could change human understanding of life beyond Earth. Butterfly by Eileen Sheehan is brilliant speculative fiction, operating in an era of interplanetary travel, where humans have experimental spacecraft and AI labs, and far-off robotic civilizations operate their own technological systems. All the characters are fully developed and feel real. I love that Stephen treats Gilo as a thinking individual rather than a machine. Tollund, a Malonian officer representing a rival extraterrestrial civilization, is the story's primary antagonist. I feel like this is where the story really kicks off, because as far as baddies go, he is a great one! It's interesting how in a full-on tech-driven world, Tollund turns to using actual insects, spores, and seeds to fight. Gilo's world is not biology-adjacent, and this just shows how cleverly Sheehan can flip a narrative into a fabulous and unique weaponization of natural biology. With world-building that is pure cinema, writing that is immersive and sharp, and a storyline with some brave new twists, readers who love intelligent science fiction will adore Butterfly. Very highly recommended.

Author Information

Eileen Sheehan is a best selling author who primarily writes hot, steamy romances (mostly New Adult) with a sexy male and strong female. A few are steamier than others (see their description). The majority of her novels are paranormal, but some are just plain novels about people in love (contemporary or historical with the author name of Ailene Frances). ALL of her stories have a bit of naughtiness, some excitement, a few thrills, and maybe a touch of mystery mixed in with sometimes naughty, sometimes sweet lovin'. She strives to write a novel length that will allow the busy woman to be able to sit down in an evening or two and be taken on a romantic journey without having a week go by before she gets to the end of the story. An incurable romantic, she has a love affair with at least one of her characters... one book at a time. She hopes the same thing happens to you. *** Eileen Sheehan started out as a freelance writer for periodical magazines and newspapers. From there, she tried her hand at writing screenplays. Her screenplay, ""When East Meets West"" was a finalist in the 2001 Independent International Film and Video Festival at Madison Square Gardens, NYC. Finally finding her niche, she lets her imagination loose with new adult/paranormal romance/thrillers (some are steamy and some are tame) with the author name of Eileen Sheehan. She creates steamy historical and contemporary romances with the author name of Ailene Frances. Seeing how far out of the box she could stretch, she crafted an alternative romance with the author name of E. F. Sheehan and has a few self-help books under her work name of Lena Sheehan. Her stories can be found in eBook, Paperback, and Audio formats.
