Он начал писать свои рассказы, в основном фантастические и романтические, в возрасте 14 лет. Как художник, он мог легко скопировать любое среднестатистическое изображение с 7 лет, и даже в этом возрасте он мог идентично воспроизвести картины профессиональных художников, таких как Рембрандт или Вермеер в возрасте 18 лет. Все истории приходили к нему во сне, и он часто вставал, чтобы сделать хотя бы какие-то заметки. К 18 годам он рассказал более сотни историй и сделал множество рисунков к ним, но его первым рассказом, попавшим на страницы, был Погребенный заживо!, который он написал только в возрасте 23 лет. Дальнейшая жизнь заставила его отойти от рассказов и повестей на долгие годы. Но я все равно вернулся к тому, что уже написал, и решил сделать последнюю версию с иллюстрациями. Было сделано около сотни иллюстраций, но не все они вошли в книгу.
