Table of ContentsReviewsLARRY STRUVE'S new book, Building Trust in Government is about the genuine public service of a Governor-Nevada's Richard H. Bryan-who understood, and lived by, the maxim of another governor, the late Adlai Stevenson of Illinois, who said, The ultimate test of a political party, the final, acid test, is not winning the election but governing the nation. Dick Bryan won lots of elections but he never lost sight that the ultimate test-which he consistently passed-was how well he governed. And in an era about which we're inclined to forget how nasty partisan politics had already become, with the rise of Rush Limbaugh and the national conservative PAC playing heavily in state elections, Governor Bryan forged the consensus he needed, built on mutual respect and his own fundamental decency, to get things done that Nevada needed done. This book is the fascinating story of how he did it. Larry's work is not a hagiography of memories recalled through rose-colored glasses. It is a factual, serious, critical when necessary, scholarly study that is well and interestingly written. Today's-and tomorrow's-politicians in Carson City and Washington, D.C. and every state capital in between would be well served to read it and learn its lessons. Dick Bryan is more than a politician who made good. He is a man who has done good, an enormous amount of good. This is a great, and instructive, telling of the story of how he did it. John Ashford, Chairman at the Hawthorn Group STRUVE'S work is insightful, a studied observation of one loyal to a good friend and dedicated to administration with integrity. Thus, it richly adds to works that add insight, color, and explanation of Nevada politics at the close of the 20th Century and pointing to the 21st. This work is particularly useful as Nevada's current leadership struggles with recession and rescission. There is much to learn from biography that, if heeded, guides our future. Robert E. It is all the more so at this time when our country cries out for leadership and integrity. I was so moved by the writing on Governor Bryan. Would that we had more leaders like him today - and that we had more public servants like one Larry Struve! - Sandy Vogelgesang, Former US Ambassador to Nepal Author InformationLarry D. Struve has devoted more than 25 years to public service in his home state of Nevada. He served as a deputy district attorney in Washoe County, chief deputy for Nevada Attorney General Richard H.
