OverviewThe brief but intense period of design and construction that developed in Russia c. 1922 - 1935 saw a remarkable proliferation of avant-garde architecture. Architects such as Konstantin Melnikov and Moisei Ginsburg were inspired by the radical new ethos of the Constructivist artists, producing designs that reflected the energy and optimism of the Soviet Socialist state. The architectural photographer Richard Pare has spent nearly twenty years documenting what remains of these iconic structures. Here, his large-scale photographs are juxtaposed with vintage images, contemporary periodicals and several drawings by Constructivist artists such as Malevich, Tatlin and Popova. Building the Revolution is essential reading for everybody interested in the history of twentieth century architecture, Constructivist art and Soviet Russia.
