Overview

This book discusses peer group programs and long range community efforts to rehabilitate street youth, gang members, and other youth who have low self-esteem, come from dysfunctional families, and are failures in school and society in general. Through his experience and workshops, Frank has found ways for these youth to deal with their rage and shame in a productive, effective, and edifying manner. The author shows how behavior and attitude improve when the youths learn to curb their feelings of inadequacy by building positive self-esteem. This will be an excellent tool for educators, counselors, social workers, and others concerned with troubled adolescents.

Youths today are maturing biologically at a younger age than ever while at the same time are faced with an increasingly complex society and uncertain future. Accordingly, intellectual resources, social skills, and coping capacities are commonly insufficient to meet the contemporary challenges required for adjustment. The proximal outcomes are low self worth and low self confidence. The distal outcomes range from school dropout to delinquency, suicide, substance abuse, and violence. This book addresses the core problem of self-esteem in youth. Drawing from Dr. Frank's extensive personal experiences, involvement in school and community, and broad exposure to different cultures, this book describes in rich personal language the tragic consequences of low self-esteem and invigorates the reader with a thoughtful set of prescriptive solutions. This book is highly recommended for anyone working with kids at high risk. -Ralph E. Tarter, Ph.D., Director Center for Education and Drug Abuse Research University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
