Etim is a Professor of Education in the Department of Education at Winston Salem State University. He received his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wyoming, Laramie. His research areas include Middle grades English Language Arts, education across cultures, instructional strategies, gender issues in education and issues related to social justice and inclusion in education. Since 2017, he has served as a Fellow in the Center for the Study of Economic Mobility at Winston Salem State University. This position has allowed him to be engaged in research on issues of academic achievement in low and high performing schools and what can be done to improve student achievement in low performing schools. He has authored one book and edited/coedited eleven books. He has published (solely and jointly) more than 60 articles and book chapters in both national and international journals and books. He has been a Co Pi of two National Science Foundation grants, with one on the use of technology in the classrooms (2013-2016). He has received two Fulbright Specialist Awards, one to Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria and the other to the Polytechnic of Namibia, Windhoek, Namibia. He has also been a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow at the University of Jos, Nigeria (2017 and 2025). Between 2015 and 2018, he served as the Education Panel Chair for the Global Undergraduate Awards, Dublin, Ireland. He is also the Founding Editor of International Journal of Gender Studies in Developing Societies and the International Journal of Education, Arts and Social issues in Africa.
