Overview

HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED This collection of texts covers Bulgarian history from its beginnings to the middle of the 10th century. It starts with the chronology of the most important events and facts in the history of the country. Book 1 consists of eight sections, each of which includes one main text about the historical events from the respective period, as well as one or more texts about notable people, facts and events related to that period. Before each text there are exercises that introduce the reader to new vocabulary and help the reader memorize the new words. Following each text there are questions that test reading comprehension, promote discussion, and suggest ideas for independent research on curious facts related to that period. At the end of the texts there is a glossary with new words translated into English and at the end of the reader all of the texts are translated into English. There is also a multiple choice test for those learners who would like to review and test themselves on some of the factual data presented in the reader. HOW THE TEXTS ARE WRITTEN The texts introduce the history of Bulgaria in a short but understandable way. The historical events are presented in the way they are known by the general public in Bulgaria and in the way in which they are taught in schools even though some of these events now have newer or alternative versions. Mainstream history, although it sometimes differs from scholarly fact and modern interpretations of events, is that which leaves a lasting imprint on the mentality and psyche of a people. WHO CAN USE THIS BOOK The text is intended for students at a B1 level or higher and can be used as both a teaching and independent study tool. Under the guidance of a teacher, this reader can also be useful for students at lower language levels with a special interest in history. HOW THIS BOOK CAN BE USED The reader can be used indepedently to enrich the students' vocabulary or as supplementary material combined with other teaching guides. The grammar used is simple as relating historical texts in Bulgarian requires the use of Present Tense. Therefore, the main challenge for the learner will be the new vocabulary ABOUT THE BULGARIAN READER SERIES Bulgarian History is the first part of a series of readers with texts designed for foreigners learning Bulgarian. The next parts include topics like the history of Bulgaria after the 10th century, Bulgarian folk tales and legends, geography and sites of interest, traditions and celebrations, and famous Bulgarians.
