OverviewIn some parts of the world, including the USA, budgies are also called parakeets. You can easily spot baby budgies by the series of bars on the feathers on top of their heads. These bars go down to the cere, which is the fleshy area above the beak where the nostrils are. When the bird is about 8-12 weeks old, the bars start to disappear, and the top of the head becomes a solid color. It's hard to tell a budgie's gender when they are young, but after about 3 months, the cere turns blue for males and brown for females. When you get your new bird, it will come in a small ""pet box."" This is the safest way to transport your budgie until you can set up its new home. It's not a good idea to move birds in open cages without covers. Budgies are one of the most popular pets in the world, right after dogs and cats. These small, friendly, and cute birds are affordable and, with proper training, can even mimic human speech. Although the origin of their formal name, ""budgerigar,"" is unknown, these birds make delightful pets for many people.
