Broken Sexuality: Mission and Christian Accountability to Love God and All People

Overview

Holding Truth and Love Together Mission today is both polycentric and multidirectional, resulting in a Christian witness amid diverse--and often conflicting--sexual values. Regardless of the beliefs held by missionaries, agencies, and sending churches, they must discern and apply biblical teaching, despite legal, economic, and international challenges. Broken Sexuality addresses these issues directly, affirming that the gospel of Jesus Christ remains good news for people burdened by sexual shame, guilt, confusion, and loneliness. Based on the 2025 Korean Global Mission Leaders Forum, this books surveys key biblical passages, case studies, and testimonies. Committed to traditional, biblical norms of male-female sexuality and marriage, the forum engaged scientific studies, church-state relations, legal standards, and more. These globally relevant studies show that despite such brokenness, every person can cry out with the apostle Paul, ""Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?"" The good news is, ""Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!""

Author Information

Michel G. Distefano (PhD, McGill) thought he was on a fast track for a career in Hebrew Bible, but after Bible college (Providence) and seminary (TEDS) in the 1980s that plan was interrupted for over a decade. So he quickly studied nursing and worked in neonatal intensive care. In the 2000s, he got his PhD and was an instructor in Hebrew Bible and ANE religions at McGill. In the 2010s, his plans were interrupted again and he became a homesteader, and lately also an independent scholar. He has been involved with KGMLF since 2019. He has known Prof. Jonathan Bonk (Dad) for more than forty years, and it has been a great privilege to work with him and the rest of the executive again. Michel and his wife, whom he also met at Bible college, are Canadians and have three children, a son and daughter-in-law, and the cutest grandchildren. J. Nelson Jennings is president of Global Mission Leadership Forum (GMLF). He is also editor of Global Missiology and East Asia coordinator for the online Dictionary of Christian Biography in Asia. He was in Japan 1986-1999 for church planting and theological education, then taught world mission at Covenant Theological Seminary for twelve years. After serving at the Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC), he was a mission consultant for Onnuri Church in Seoul. His published works include Theology in Japan: Takakura Tokutaro (1885-1934) and God the Real Superpower: Rethinking Our Role in Missions. Jinbong Kim, the coordinator of KGMLF, proposed its establishment in 2008, and currently serves as the managing director of the umbrella organization, the Global Mission Leadership Forum. He developed a new model for an international mission forum designed to enhance understanding between Western (Global) and Korean missionaries--an issue he had contemplated for an extended period. Since 1990, after several years of missionary work in the Muslim regions of West Africa, Kim took a sabbatical in 2006 at the Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC) in New Haven, Connecticut, where he began his tenure as a host before advancing to the role of director of International Church Relations. Prior to his time at OMSC, he studied at Chongshin Theological Seminary and Chongshin Graduate School of Mission in Seoul, South Korea. In 1994, he and his wife joined GMS and subsequently became affiliated with WEC International in 1998. They furthered their education at All Nations Christian College in England, and Kim also interned at a church in France. They then spent two terms engaging with Fulani Muslims in Guinea. Kim has been fortunate to collaborate with esteemed colleagues, including Dr. Jonathan Bonk, Dr. Nelson Jennings, and Rev. Jae Hoon Lee, over the years. Jae Hoon Lee has served as the senior pastor of Onnuri Church in Seoul since 2011. Previously, he pastored the Chodae Community Church in New Jersey for four years. As an evangelist, he leads one of the most innovative megachurches in South Korea, exerting considerable influence in both Christian and non-Christian communities across the nation through creative uses of social media, art, and publishing. Additionally, as a cochair of the Fourth Lausanne Congress in 2024, he made a significant contribution by successfully hosting the event, which resulted in the release of the impactful Seoul Statement in Incheon, South Korea. He has also served as a board member of the Global Mission Leadership Forum since the organization's inception.
