As the world moves into an uncertain post-theory phase, and one can see an increasing intolerance which threatens to disrupt the painstakingly constructed language of Indian modernity, there is a profound need for conversations and dialogues that can lead to self-questioning and open up a meaningful interpretative space. Broken Mirror captures the life-experiences, worldviews, hopes and frustrations of several leading cultural personalities who have left a deep imprint on the shaping of the Indian ethos. The individuals represented here cover a significantly wide range of authors, filmmakers, scholars, artists and critics who simultaneously represent Bengal and India. Through these interviews, Chinmoy Guha draws out the inner self of these personalities, examines their personal trajectories and worldviews in the face of the changing paradigm of cultural and knowledge discourse in the country, and traces the formation and evolution of the larger cultural milieu.

Author Information

Chinmoy Guha is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Calcutta and an author and translator. He has served as Vice-Chancellor, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, and Director of Publications, Embassy of France, New Delhi. He won the Sahitya Akademi award for his book of essays, Ghumer Darja Thele, in 2019. The French Government has honoured him with the titles of Chevalier des Palmes académiques, and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. The French President conferred on him the prestigious title of Chevalier de l'Ordre national du mérite. He has also been awarded the Bimala Churn Law Gold Medal of the Asiatic Society. His other works include Where the Dreams Cross: T.S. Eliot and French Poetry, Bridging East and West, 1919-1940, and translations of La Rochefoucauld, Gustave Flaubert, and André Gide.
