Professor Nigel Walker has written the Foreword to this unique and informative book. He writes that author Tony Black has the advantage of being both an insider and a professional; that his understanding of the problems of both psychiatry and management gave him an insight into what was going wrong - but also into what was going right. The helpful preface by John Graham White, a friend and colleague of the author, says this history has been eye-opening. White concludes in his Preface that the book is not just the story of Broadmoor - it is also the magnifying glass through which we may see the concepts and reappraisals we need to make about sadness, madness and badness generally.
