Overview

"In this volume the author reveals just how pervasive a Christian discourse was in shaping the terms of British Imperial rule, whether it be the Government of India Act, the Simon Commission, or the Round Table Conferences. Throughout, the Christian's lexicon was restricted to a tradition of orientalism in which British for India was seen to facilitate the working of Divine Providence. It explores relevant aspects of church historiography, the publications and activities of the Indian YMCA and Quaker activists and in the final chapter draws these strands together in the context of ""subaltern studies""."

Reviews

`Wide-ranging study ... This is a valuable and reflective, though densely written, book ... It is much to be hoped that the author will continue his investigations in this field.' Richard Symonds, St Antony's College, Oxford, The Round Table (1992) `Dr Studdert-Kennedy has written an important book which fills admirably a serious gap in the scholarly literature. Many of the movements and people with whom he deals are now virtually forgotten, but in their day thay had an influence which was considerable and needs to be taken into account by the historian. Dr Studdert-Kennedy has given us a book which is not only definitive but eminently readable.' Duncan B. Forrester, University of Edinburgh, The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History `The singular achievement of Gerald Studdert-Kennedy is to have established the link between Christianity and Empire, which the official ideology of colonial rule sought to play down from the Mutiny onwards, with arresting images and meticulous historical evidence. Warmly recommended.' Political Studies `A scholarly study of the attitudes of British Christians toward India.' Missiology `In the context of the new orientations in imperial historiography ... [this book] is a very important landmark. I shall be surprised if this volume fails to get recognised as a classic.' Tapan Raychaudhuri, Reader in Modern South Asian History, University of Oxford

A valuable and interesting read ... Studdert-Kennedy has provided us with an informative and worthwhile text that may well help us to understand some of the tension that exists in modern India. Contemporary South Asia Studdert-Kennedy's work, and this book in particular, fills a large gap in modern, scholarly literature concerned with the place of religion in the colonial administration in the early twentieth century. Contemporary South Asia In this informative and dense book. Gerald Studdert-Kennedy explores the historical development of British Christianity in India between the two World Wars, although much of what he has to say is of extreme relevance to more recent events.
