OverviewBringing Up Boys is a parenting program that acknowledges the barriers and prejudices encountered by mothers who are raising sons where fathers are largely absent. The aims of the program are both educative and therapeutic. Using a Narrative Therapy approach to challenge ideas and beliefs that may constrain sole mothers in their parenting, Bringing Up Boys includes discussion on gender and how gendered assumptions can undermine women parenting in sole parent families. The Narrative approach provides a theoretical base to strengthen the confidence of women in raising their sons in the actual circumstances of their lives. The program builds on identifying strengths and competencies and accessing the 'practice wisdom' of mothers.
