Overview

All around the world protection for threatened wilderness areas continues its expansion through the support of an unexpected activity: Sport Hunting. In this book, outdoor writer and scientist Mike Arnold takes readers on a global odyssey stalking vast tracts of wilderness in the U.S. and Canada, Coutadas and preserves in Africa, rain forests in Central America, and game lands in Europe. He encounters apex predators, exotic birds, and game animals of all kinds, many of which now thrive in places that not long ago had been devoid of wildlife. Behind it all are the people Arnold meets and the various ways they manage the land under their care. Whether through tribal stewardship, communal property traditions, private hunting concessions, or techniques akin to farming, each of the wilderness areas Arnold visits has one thing in common...they owe their existence to the funding derived from strictly managed sport hunting. For anyone who enjoys the outdoors - hunter or not - the lesson in Arnold's adventures is unequivocal: Hunters and the money they invest in their passions are the fuel for the world's greatest conservation success stories.

Author Information

Mike Arnold has been a lifelong hunter. The Hunter's Horn sounded very early for him. From the age of five, Mike has spent months each year pursuing game animals-from quail and rabbits behind his parents' house to kudu and leopard in Africa to brocket deer in Mexico. Mike has published hundreds of articles in outdoor magazines, including feature pieces in Sports Afield, Game Trails, Hunter's Horn, Safari Magazine, and African Hunting Gazette. Mike also produced two TEDx presentations on the topic of conservation through trophy hunting. Mike's book BRINGING BACK THE LIONS: International Hunters, Local Tribespeople, and the Miraculous Rescue of a Doomed Ecosystem in Mozambique appeared in July 2022. Combined with his love of the outdoors, hunting, and conservation, is his passion for science. Mike is a Distinguished Research Professor and Head of the Department of Genetics at the University of Georgia. He has published hundreds of research articles and four books on topics including conservation biology. Media outlets such as Science Magazine, The New York Times, National Public Radio, and CNN call on Mike for interviews covering his research. Mike lives in Georgia with his wife, Frances. Their cat abandoned them after sixteen years, and they have no plans to ever have a pet again.
