""This booklet is a modest attempt to interest our neighbours in their surroundings. To record as far as possible, the social life of the inhabitants of our two villages, at various times, and in diverse conditions. To note their feasts, and fairs, sports and pastimes, faiths, and superstitions, and so enable many of them to take a more intelligent interest in the study of the past. Especially is this necessary when the attractions of towns, or the delights of travel, are threatening to destroy rural life. To increase the attractions of our villages, to arouse an interest in their history and social life, to know more about the lives of those who trod our village street in by-gone times, as well as to stimulate local patriotism, is an effort well worth the attempt."" -Dr. H.
