In addition to developing language and communication skills, reading can create a stronger bond between parent and child. Breezy The Cloud, written by Jessalyn Bazzle and illustrated by Jamie Cain, does just that. Through its simple imagery and word choice, this cute story about a little cloud who wishes to be cool is a delightful way for preschoolers to learn and connect. In it, Breezy becomes a new member of the Cool Cloud Club at Seagull Beach, but he doesn't know how to create the type of clouds that stir people to look at the sky above the beach. It is not until he learns some pointers from other clouds and develops the patience to cultivate his unique talent that Breezy produces a cloud as cool as the rest. What I love the most about Breezy The Cloud is the way it taps into a memory that many adults can understand. I remember when I was a child watching clouds move across the sky and imagining their shapes as anything my imagination could envision. Depicting this memory in a picture book is a wonderful way to find an emotional connection in a shared experience from the natural world. I also thought the words and illustrations by Jessalyn Bazzle and Jamie Cain were especially well-chosen and age-appropriate for the book's reading age of 4-7 years. What child of that age would not appreciate unicorns, pelicans, starfish, dragons, and mermaids, while learning an important lesson about the value of persistence? I highly recommend this lovely little book. Author InformationJessalyn Bazzle lives in South Carolina where she has enjoyed time spent cloud watching and stargazing since she was a little girl.
