Breaking Into Sports: The Real Guide to Landing Your Dream Job

Overview

You've spent your whole life loving sports. Now you want to get paid for it. So... how? Breaking into the sports industry isn't about passion. It's about strategy, relationships, and being willing to do what others won't. Yet most sports management programs stop at theory, case studies, and generic advice-leaving students and young professionals unprepared for how this industry actually works. Breaking Into Sports is the honest, practical guide that finally fills that gap. Written by someone who has built a decade-long career inside professional sports, this book cuts through the noise and gives you a real, step-by-step roadmap to stand out, get hired, and build a career you're proud of-without relying on luck or connections. This isn't a textbook. This isn't motivational fluff. This is the playbook the author wishes he'd had as a freshman. Inside, you'll learn: Why passion alone won't get you hired-and what actually separates candidates in a stack of thousands of applications How to network the right way, building real relationships instead of transactional connections that go nowhere How to write cold emails that get responses, run effective informational interviews, and follow up without feeling awkward What to expect in your first job, from long hours and entry-level sales pressure to handling rejection without burning out How to turn early roles into career launchpads, with real guidance on progression, pivots, and timing your next move The stuff nobody tells you, including burnout, impostor syndrome, geographic flexibility, and knowing when it's time to pivot Featuring 250+ insights from people who made it, including commissioners, Hall of Famers, Olympians, general managers, professional athletes, and sports executives sharing the advice they wish they'd had when breaking in. This book is for: Students trying to figure out their path Recent grads grinding through applications Early-career professionals wondering if they're doing this right If you're tired of piecing together advice from scattered informational interviews, outdated textbooks, and social media posts, this is your playbook. The roadmap is here. Now it's your turn to take the field.

Reviews

""Stuart's insight into the ever-changing world of sports gives young people the perspective and confidence they need to move forward. The sports industry can be challenging, but with the right guidance, it becomes a place full of opportunity. Stuart understands not just the business of sports, but the people in it, and that's what helps students navigate their own path with purpose."" Annie Meyers Drysdale, Olympian, Basketball Hall of Famer, Only Woman to try out with an NBA Team ""Stuart's journey from intern to industry professional embodies everything this book teaches. I've watched him navigate the challenges of breaking into sports with persistence, authenticity, and genuine relationship-building. What sets this book apart is that Stuart isn't theorizing, he's done it, through internships and a decade of real experience. He understands what it actually takes to go from loving sports to working in sports, and he knows how to explain it in a way that gives students actionable guidance they can use immediately."" Alan Nero, Managing Director, Baseball, Octagon ""I've known Stuart since he was trying to break into the sports industry, and what he writes in this book is what he's actually lived. Think of it as a diary about how to get in, how to progress, and how to succeed in this business. This isn't theory, it's the real path he took. Stuart didn't just observe the industry from the outside; he worked his way through it, made the mistakes, learned the lessons, and figured out what actually works. That experience shows on every page."" Pat O'Conner, Former MiLB President ""As an athlete who meets a lot of people, you're always cautious as to who you let into your circle. Easily upon meeting Stuart I knew that genuineness was something I picked up immediately. When you have good people around you, I believe you try and keep them around as they want to protect you and try their hardest to make sure a good time is had. That's all I've had with our interactions. I'm sure I'm not the only one and that's the best part of the story. Good people are simply good people."" Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer ""We are all grateful for having a career in sports and for someone initially believing in us to get our start. Stuart's ability to share his knowledge with those looking to get into this space, as well as his passion to help others, is unmatched. We all could have used this advice and perspective when looking for that break, and we never forget those who responded to our requests for advice and interviews in the beginning. It should be our responsibility to do the same for others."" Derrick Hall, President & CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks
