Overview

Breadth of Bodies seeks to investigate and dismantle the language and stereotypes often used to describe professional dancers with disabilities. Spearheaded by dancer/writer Emmaly Wiederholt and dance educator Silva Laukkanen with illustrations by visual artist Liz Brent-Maldonado, the team collected interviews with 35 professional dance artists with disabilities from 15 countries, asking about training, access, and press, as well as looking at the state of the field.

Author Information

Emmaly Wiederholt is a dance artist and arts journalist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the founder and editor of Stance on Dance (stanceondance.com), a dance journalism nonprofit that dissects the dance world. Emmaly earned her MA in arts journalism from the University of Southern California and her BFA in ballet and BS in political science from the University of Utah. She further trained at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and performed extensively around the Bay Area. Her first book, Beauty is Experience: Dancing 50 and Beyond, was published in 2017. She continues to perform and teach throughout the Southwest. Silva Laukkanen loves the beautiful moments that are created in space by bodies telling stories. During a chance opportunity to teach at a rehabilitation center in her native Finland, she was reminded of the transformative power of movement in the lives of everyday people, and because of this experience she decided to focus her career on community and inclusive dance. She wants to expand the notion of who can dance and where dance should happen. This inquiry sparked the idea in 2016 to start DanceCast: a podcast to bring awareness about dance artists working outside traditional norms. Liz Brent-Maldonado is a multi-disciplinary creator of art, writing, and holistic educational experiences. Originally fromColorado, she is a University of Colorado at Boulder alum and lived in Kyoto, Japan before moving to San Francisco in 2009. Liz loves design, research, travel, colors, and coffee. Whether costumes or comics, her favorite projects feature magical realism and the everyday infused with otherworldly or surreal elements. She delights in the intersections of the practical and theatrical, the fantastical and the scientific, movement and stillness, comfort and organization, solitary focus with team collaboration.
