Enfant prodige, il est eleve dans la devotion a Bach, Mozart et Beethoven. Pianiste doue, il enseigne, accompagne des chanteurs, joue de l'orgue et le soir du piano dans les tavernes, a l'age ou d'autres compositeurs poursuivaient encore leur education musicale. Ses rencontres avec le violoniste Joachim et le couple Robert et Clara Schumann sont decisives.A trente ans, il part a la conquete du difficile milieu musical Viennois et recoit l'aide du critique Hanslick et du chef d'orchestre Hans Von Bulow. Dote d'une sante magnifique et d'une generosite sans borne, Brahms regna paisiblement sur un quart de siecle de la vie musicale Viennoise.Il meurt a Bonn le 3 avril 1897 et rejoint Schubert et Beethoven au cimetiere de Vienne.Son oeuvre est immense et couvre tous les domaines, a l'exception de l'opera, mais le piano y occupe une place preponderante.
