This was Bowie pre-Ziggy Stardust and stardom, shooting the cover for his first album. I was the only one he knew with a studio camera, remembers the photographer Gerald Fearnley.--Chloe Fein The Cut The legendary singer, songwriter and actor's life was very much out in the open, but just last year, an unseen series of photographs was released by the famous photographer Gerald Fearnley. The rare photos, taken 50 years ago for Bowie's first album cover shoot, are now being published in a book, released on Aug. 1, titled Bowie Unseen: Portraits of an Artist as a Young Man. --Melanie Moccia AXS, July 31, 2017 The icon died after a cancer battle in January 2016 as a champion for the weird and a musical hero for rock stars and mortals alike. But when he debuted with his self-titled LP on June 1, 1967, he did so as David Bowie... the photos taken during its cover shoot have resurfaced, offering a new look at the then-20-year-old as he was still finding his makeup-loving, dramatic-posing, avant-garde identity.--Madison Vain Entertainment Weekly The playful energy of a young Bowie comes alive through each of the images, delivering a strong sense of nostalgia to each page. The man in the photos, although familiar, feels like a new version of Bowie altogether, one quite separate from his glamorous stage persona.--Dominique Norman Observer

Author Information

Gerald Fearnley is a professional photographer, famous for capturing the front cover shot for Bowie's first album, David Bowie, in the '60s. The friendship between the Fearnley family and Bowie meant that Bowie spent a lot of time at Gerald's house in Worcester Park, Surrey, both preparing for gigs and writing songs.
