Overview

The subjects or beneficiaries of social work that organizations undertake are usually people or communities that are at the ‘bottom of the pyramid’. This book looks at social action programmes and strategies targeted to help the ‘bottomliers’ or the most vulnerable groups in society. This book focuses on people such as the sick, the poor, the physically challenged, and the old; and explores the intent and strategy of social organizations—charitable, social business, corporate social action programmes and civil society organisations—to help the marginalised and address challenges they face. These organisations must balance the commercial and charitable aspects of business while operating and implementing programmes that service those in need. The book includes detailed case studies on organizations from divergent fields and analyses how they design and implement effective social action strategies. This book will be of use to CSR managers, academicians and students of sustainable development, business, management and marketing, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and business ethics, sociology and social work. It will also be of interest to social policy makers and civil society organizations.

Reviews

""While we have been dreaming about ‘Viksit Bharat’ and boasting about India’s unparalleled ‘Youth assets’ for the coming three decades, Dr. Gopal Krishnan’s book is an eye opener for the magnitude of the problem in the area of economic inadequacies affecting the lives of underprivileged in multiple ways. ‘Bottom of the pyramid’ facing variety of challenges viz. financial, social, physical on health front and interplay of all these may bring insurmountable impediments in achieving the developmental goals by the country. The book not only draws attention to these issues but also in a lucid and convincing way provides ample examples of innovative social initiatives undertaken and strategies adopted by Indian business corporates, NGOs and conscious individuals. Perhaps the ancient tradition of Indian way of life – teaching and preaching, ‘giving back to the society’, may be the solution to maintaining perfect equilibrium and stability for the development and progress. I would strongly recommend reading of this book to all those who wish to understand the subject and get variety of ideas for successful implementation."" Markand Bhatt, Former Group CEO Torrent Group and Currently CEO UN Mehta Foundation, the Group’s Social Initiative Organization ""A timely and highly relevant addition to management literature. Organisations in society serve interests of multiple stakeholders but most of strategy books focus on consumers, producers and employees as key stakeholders and use these lenses to theorise. This book is an exception in many ways. First, the cases covered by the author range from social responsibility of for profit sector to philanthropic organisations providing public services in health and social care, from social enterprise to charities. The second feature that distinguishes the book is the choice of case studies. The author combines studies with other evidence to offer strategic insights. The unifying theme of all the cases is organisational purpose that transcends profit motive. Many of these case studies are not that of well-known organisations but these organisations with roots in the community or activities that benefit those at the bottom of pyramid in Prahaldian metaphor that the author frames the beneficiaries. The beneficiaries include kids with special learning needs to elderly to those suffering from disease. Humane approach to strategizing in these organisations needs to be understood, internalised and practised. Hope students of social sciences, management and social work practice will get opportunity to learn from this exquisite and well-researched book. Professor Gopalkrishnan has done unique service to the management education."" Devendra Kodwani, Professor of Financial Management and Corporate Governance, The Open University Business School, UK
