Author Information

A storyteller at heart, Steve Lamar grew up near the Ohio River exploring the hills and forests of southern Illinois. After graduating from Murray State University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation, he worked for 17 seasons with the Forest Service as a forestry technician and backcountry ranger. As an outdoor instructor and guide for 12 years, he hiked, skied, and camped in the backcountry guiding groups of young adults. He was also the owner of Rumble Peak Geodata, specializing in natural resource and historical data collection. He retired as the program manager for Northwest Connections, a Swan Valley conservation and education organization, where he worked as an instructor, as well as field assistant on the Northern Divide Grizzly Bear DNA Project and the whitebark pine research project. Since the later 1970s, he and his wife, Sharon, have lived in Swan Valley where their two children, Annie and Luke, were born. A local history buff, Steve currently serves as the president of the Upper Swan Valley Historical Society.
