OverviewBorn of Violence is a collection of five theatre plays, each created out of or inspired by violent situations, violent events, violent behaviour or simply violent and aggressive language. They were written - as all my plays are written - to try and make a difference to the lives of the audiences they hoped (and still hope!) to gather, not by revelling in or celebrating violence but confronting it. I was lucky enough to get outside opinions on all the works and two of them made it to performance. This collection includes The Bond (1984) - a Pinter-esque story of fratricidal rivalry, A Horse With No Name (2003) and One of the Lads (2004) - explorations of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, The Next Life (2005) - the life of a doomed London drug dealer and X (2006) - homophobia in North East England. These plays were created out of different forms of violence and cover areas such as physical and psychological violence and violence of emotions, expressions and frustrations and perhaps most importantly the violence that comes out of fear. There's plenty of black humour in among them too as humour is not only often an expression of fear but also essential as a counter-weight.
