OverviewWithin three centuries, seven west-coast islands evolved into the Bombay peninsula, then into a flourishing centre for trade, ultimately becoming the cosmopolitan, high-rise metropolis of Mumbai. This illustrated text charts the momentous changes to the cityscape of Bombay and, using paintings, maps and photographs, attempts to reconstruct images of the past. Analytical articles examine the effect of land restriction on urban development and how the Victorian gothic revival and the later Art Deco period were adapted and incorporated. Urban settlement patterns and their unique symbols are considered: Bombay's harbour dictated the position of the Fort and consequently determined the distinctive patterns of expansion beyond its walls. As peoples of different communities, creeds and nationalities settled in various enclaves, their places of worship became permanent icons. British statues are symbolic of a former power, while certain institutions, the mills and cinema halls, represent phases of industrial progress. Full Product DetailsAuthor: P. Rohatgi , Pheroza J.
