Overview

""This is a brilliant new way to write a memoir... I feel enriched, and grateful to discover a different way to go through my days. I loved every word."" Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life Body: My Life in Parts is the memoir of an ex-pat Norwegian Lutheran turned American Viking Jewess who is on a quest. This front-end Gen X'er wonders ""How the hell did I end up here, now, like this?"" The author uses her body to find her answers. In stand-alone but interconnected chapters (""Eyes,"" ""Belly,"" ""Breasts,"" ""Hands,"" etc.; 16 chapters in all), body parts serve as portals toward remembrances grounded in the physical body while linking to other forms of experience, with one goal: making sense of a life that she realizes-only through writing it- has been full of reactivity and agency, despite her rarely noticing it in the moment. A quiet, grounding book in turbulent, uncertain times, Body: My Life in Parts, shows the reader how the treasure chest that is her own body can be a source of meaningful discovery, and recovery, of meaning. This book celebrates the body as witness and recordkeeper; a most dependable collaborator in ""keeping the score"" and in living a more examined life. An appendix with body memory/writing prompts is also included, serving as a guide for readers who want to explore how to re-member-bring together-their own life-building stories.

Reviews

""This is a brilliant new way to write a memoir... I feel enriched, and grateful to discover a different way to go through my days. I loved every word."" Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life ""At a time when women's bodies are under more outside scrutiny than ever, it's a joy and a journey to consider our bodies from the inside, and our place in the world through our corporeal selves."" Allison K Williams, author of Seven Drafts ""Body as portal, body as record-keeper, body as witness, body as accomplice....Body: My Life in Parts eloquently proves that the ""body nation"" is a treasure chest of memories waiting for each of us to unlock and explore... A very interesting and provocative read... truly inspiring."" Lesléa Newman, author of I Carry My Mother and I Wish My Father ""This book, like the female body, is full of soft curves and sharp edges, vulnerabilities and scars, impressions and depressions, pleasures and pain... It is muscle memory in the written form. A must read for anyone with a body."" Talya Jankovits, author of girl woman wife mother ""Nina B. Lichtenstein is an archeologist of her own history in these pages, excavating the stories her body holds, bringing them to light. This is a clear-eyed memoir, a book both muscular and graceful, visceral and wise."" Gayle Brandeis, author of Drawing Breath: Essays on Writing, the Body, and Loss ""A celebratory party of flesh and folds and backs and butts and bone! From scars on the skin to the smells of childhood to nightmares of missing teeth, Lichtenstein takes the parts that make up our miraculous living machines and asks them to guide her through memory, towards meaning."" Diane Gottlieb, editor of Awakenings: Stories of Body & Consciousness ""Nina B. Lichtenstein takes a refreshingly original approach to understanding the mind-body connection through history of her own aging Gen X body. Body part by body part, this inventory is made all the more compelling by Lichtenstein's deep curiosity about the human condition, and her engaging voice."" Sari Botton, author of And You May Find Yourself...Confessions of a Late-Blooming Gen-X Weirdo ""Reflective, emotional, and with moments of deep heart and humor, Nina reminds readers that an aging body isn't just something to grumble about-it's the record of a life well lived."" Steph Auteri, author of A Dirty Word ""Nina B. Lichtenstein takes us to some of the most memorable stories sparked by the touchstones that are her skin, nose, hips, eyes, vagina, belly and more, but they could be our own tales, too. That's a fact we ponder as we head off to visit the history museums of our own parts, and to send gratitude to the author for helping us to see ourselves in a whole new way."" Suzanne Strempek Shea, author of Songs from a Lead-Lined Room
