Table of ContentsReviewsRead Woke books expands into fiction with the uplifting Bo at the Buzz early chapter-book series, starring a Black boy who lives above his grandfather's barbershop, the Buzz. In this title, an exciting announcement is made to Bo's class: their school is starting a community garden! Bo and his three pals (Silas, Zuri, and Shawn) quickly form a group and start thinking about what they'll grow in their plot. Unfortunately, they can't agree, and their first class outing to the garden ends in a fight. Back at the Buzz, Bo asks Pop-Pop what they should plant, but it's the man in Pop-Pop's chair who makes the wonderful suggestion of growing vegetables for the local homeless shelter. This is something Bo and his friends can all agree on, and they're soon up to their elbows in dirt and fun. The book's three short chapters feature cultural touchstones and lively color illustrations. Readers not yet ready for the J.D. the Kid Barber series, by J. Dillard, will find the same Black Boy Joy here.--Booklist -- Journal (11/1/2022 12:00:00 AM) Author InformationElliott Smith is a writer and editor based in Falls Church, Virginia.
