Blossom English: The Umbrella Man and Other Stories by Roald Dahl: An English Language Study Workbook for Advanced Students

Overview

The Blossom English series helps students develop their grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills by integrating activities with amazing short stories by some of the most popular writers in the world. The Blossom English series was created to be used in classrooms, and is not a self-study textbook. Blossom English: The Umbrella Man and Other Stories by Roald Dahl is an advanced-level study textbook. It uses 7 of the short stories from Roald Dahl's collection of mysterious, dark, richly detailed tales. Within the textbook, learning activities focus on improving vocabulary, practicing essential grammar forms, idioms and phrasal verbs, as well as sentence development to essay writing. Interesting and relevant debate topics give students opportunities to practice speaking and listening in English. The Blossom English series is a content-based textbook that uses authentic readings with grammar, writing, and speaking exercises. While the textbook is rich with grammar exercises, exercises can be used to A) create conversations from the grammar exercises B) test students on the problematic grammar points throughout the book, and C) connect the reading book with sections of the textbook, for example, the making perfect sentences and grammar focus sections. For classes studying English approximately 3-4 hours a week, try to finish one reading section, one grammar focus/preposition/article exercise, and one writing assignment. Each week, test students on one of the grammar exercises, have a review test of the vocabulary, and always use the textbook as an opportunity to speak with students. In order to prepare for writing essays, debate the topic before giving the assignment for homework.
