Blood indicators of chronic stress due to hypoxia in tilapia

Overview

The variation in secondary response to stress due to hypoxia was evaluated over 18 days in a recirculation system in the chitralada strain of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), reflected in biochemical and haematological components, as well as the difference between sexes. A total of 126 fish (60 males and 66 females) were used, both with an average weight of 800 g. After chronic hypoxia stress, the tilapia showed changes (P0.05) in platelet count. The stress also caused changes in serum glucose, VG, red blood cell and haemoglobin levels due to an increase in the female group, leukocytosis due to an increase in the relative value of lymphocytes and total protein levels (P0.05) due to an increase in the male group, altered phosphorus and creatinine levels, and relative eosinophil values (P0.05) due to a decrease in both sexes. Regarding the sex of the fish, females had higher values (P0.05) of cortisol, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, HGM, CHGM, albumin, β-globulin and relative levels of γ-globulin compared to males, who had higher VGM values than females.
