OverviewBlood flow restriction exercise has become very popular in the fitness industry. This novel concept has sparked interest as it is promising to extend the benefits earned from exercise. Blood flow restriction has been consistently used, with traditional resistance exercise, as a modality to improve muscular strength and muscle growth. While we realize that trends in the fitness industry come and go, and go and come. Blood flow restriction can trace its origins back to the 1960's. This is when, as legend would tell us, Dr. Sato stumbled on the concept of blood flow restriction during a memorial service. Dr. Sato then used blood flow restriction to recovery from a winter sport injury. The rehabilitative side to blood flow restriction, has gained interest and acceptance among many physical therapists. Physical therapists, have reported that the lower loads used during blood flow restriction resistance exercise, has resulted in similar benefits to that of high load non-blood flow restriction, or traditional resistance exercise. This alone, has stimulated interest beyond the clinical populations. The general, and athletic populations seek to benefit from the participation in blood flow restriction resistance exercise. Moreso, there has been proven success within these populations. However, I do not expect you to blindly accept the benefits that are possible from blood flow restriction resistance exercise. Instead, use the guidelines displayed in this book, extracted from peer-referred research studies. While the science is very interesting, that is not the entire purpose of this book. The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the concept of blood flow restriction, and how to, at the current moment use this modality of exercise effectively. In addition, this book will outline the common blood flow restriction cuff brands. While I neither have relationships with any one brand of BFR cuff, nor would I stand behind one cuff brand, I will display the common ones and hope that you select one that matches your personal needs. Once these basics are established, the currently known science and mechanistic underpinnings will be examined to supplement the commonly accepted blood flow restriction exercise practices. My hopes are that this book will allow you to begin using blood flow restriction cuffs as soon as possible.
