OverviewIn the post-socialist Republic of Carpathia, the gray, industrial city of Severograd is struggling to find its footing in a new era of capitalism. Amidst the decaying concrete and lifting fog, a new power has arrived: VitaCorp. A multinational healthcare conglomerate, VitaCorp, promises to modernize the nation's crumbling medical infrastructure with gleaming glass towers and state-of-the-art dialysis centers. To the public and the government, they are saviors; to Dr. Andrej Varga, they are a lethal infection. Dr. Varga is a dedicated, old-school nephrologist who runs the last independent dialysis clinic in Severograd. He views medicine as a sacred covenant, not a transaction. As VitaCorp aggressively expands, it seeks to monopolize the market by absorbing or crushing all independent providers. When Varga refuses to sell his clinic to VitaCorp's ruthless Regional Director, Boris Dragovic - a ""predator in a suit"" who views patients as mere revenue units - he becomes the target of a coordinated siege. The conflict escalates from bureaucratic harassment to deadly malpractice. Varga begins to notice a disturbing pattern among patients transferring from VitaCorp facilities: unexplained infections and rapid health deterioration. He is approached by Lena, a disillusioned nurse who fled VitaCorp after witnessing their horrors firsthand. Together, they uncover the company's dark ""efficiencies"" ""The Churn"" A calculated policy of involuntarily discharging ""unprofitable"" patients - those with complex comorbidities or those who complain - condemning them to death. Filter Reuse: The secret reuse of single-use dialyzers to cut costs, leading to fatal sepsis in patients. Time Shaving: Shortening dialysis sessions to increase patient turnover, slowly poisoning those they are meant to save. As Varga and Lena gather evidence, the retaliation is swift and brutal. Dragovic leverages his corruption of the Ministry of Health - specifically the compromised Minister Dragan Kostov - to freeze Varga's insurance reimbursements, manufacture false inspections, and suspend his medical license. The attacks turn physical and psychological: Varga survives a staged car ""accident"" meant to silence him, while Lena receives a grim warning - a human kidney left on her doorstep. Isolated by his colleagues and slandered in the press as negligent, Varga is pushed to the brink of ruin. The narrative comes to a head during the EU Healthcare Summit hosted in Carpathia's capital - a glittering event meant to showcase the nation's modernization to the West. Possessing a satchel of damning evidence (internal memos, falsified logs, and contaminated filters), Varga attempts to reach the summit to expose the rot. He is hunted through the frozen Carpathian wilderness by Dragovic's enforcers in a harrowing chase across icy ridges. Surviving the physical hunt, Varga infiltrates the summit. Just as European delegates are lauding the Minister of Health and VitaCorp executives, Varga interrupts the proceedings. In a dramatic confrontation, he presents his evidence to the international press and the European Commission, revealing that the ""Carpathian Miracle"" is built on a foundation of suffering and ""blood equity."" The revelation triggers a political earthquake. Stock prices plummet, the Minister of Health is forced to resign, and Boris Dragovic faces criminal charges. However, the novel ends on a realistic, bittersweet note. While the specific villains are removed, the system of corporate greed remains largely intact, merely wounded. Varga returns to his modest clinic, battered but unbroken. He recognizes that the war for ethical medicine is eternal, and he resumes his work as a quiet sentinel in the mist - a guardian of human dignity in a world consumed by profit.
