OverviewLife offers some unexpected twists and turns, but none more so than with young David Winslow. Taken from an upper-class, cultured home in Boston, Massachusetts, to provincial Sinclair, Maine, after his mother's remarriage, he and his mother suffer the pains of prejudice from the local population. David attempts to hide the hurt from his mother after he is teased and bullied not only by students at school but also by the general population. It is when the son of the most prominent family in Sinclair is killed that David finds himself in the grip of misfortune. He is accused of negligent homicide. Targeted by a local and eccentric district attorney who wants to prosecute this ""child of privilege"" to the maximum degree to gain public approval, David is propelled into a perilous environment where any day could be his last. His time in prison is not the unbearable experience he thinks it will be; on the contrary, his time there is positive. His release from prison doesn't end his troubles, but he is now ready to deal with any adversity and, in doing so, changes the minds and lives of those around him.
