OverviewBleeding Blue will take you on a journey through the history of the New York City Police Department, focusing on Line-of-Duty deaths. Since the inception of a police force in New York City, dating back to 1845, over 1,100 police officers of all ranks have made the ultimate sacrifice. Hundreds have been shot to death, and hundreds more died from 9/11-related illnesses. Still, nearly two hundred more died as a result of a vehicle accident. Yet, those were the more common ways these heroes laid down their lives. Others were killed in explosions, bombings, ingesting toxins, fire and water rescues, and one even contracted typhoid fever. Surprisingly, more officers were killed in the line of duty due to an accident with a horse than were stabbed to death. Bleeding Blue will delve into well over one hundred of these line-of-duty deaths, touching on some historic incidents within the department along the way. While all of the line-of-duty deaths were horrible, some were particularly brutal, tragic, or brought change to the department. A few even caught the nation's attention. All of them, however, shook the NYPD rank and file to their core.
