OverviewCaught up in the events of the French Revolution in Paris, M. de Marsilly is imprisoned for attempting to protect King Louis XVI. Before his execution, he commends his wife and daughter to his fellow-prisoner, the holy Abbé Granier, and confides to him his last desire for his daughter's future. When the Abbé miraculously escapes from prison, Madam de Marsilly and her daughter, Blanche, persuade the good Abbé to remain with them, enabling their friends and neighbors often to assist at Mass. Among those attending the Masses in secret at the de Marsillys' home is the courageous young Henry Melville, who had fought against the godless Republic as a writer for the Paris Gazette and had once saved M. de Marsilly's life. But when a poor man who had received the charity of the de Marsillys betrays them to the authorities and Blanche and her mother are imprisoned, it seems impossible that the last wish of Blanche's father will ever be realized.
